SME Ghana Awards offers more than 20 award categories, including the MICRO Entrepreneurs Award introduced in the 2016 Edition. The award categories are grouped in focus areas: Industrial Sector, Service Sector and other categories. Click the links below for a detailed description of the categories.

Companies are allowed and encouraged to submit multiple entries in multiple categories in SME Ghana Awards 2017.

Definition: This award is bestowed on entrepreneurs in the micro business sector who are identified and recognized for the extraordinary contributions that they have made to the economic sustainability of their business and to the growth of Ghana’s economy. They must employ 2 – 9 persons. Selection Criteria: The award recipient must exhibit excellent entrepreneurial spirit and must be well positioned to becoming the “SME Company of the Future”. Their achievements must be impressive enough to inspire individuals who aspire to become entrepreneurs. They must provide evidence of projected growth in the next 5 years. By Application

Definition: This recognition award is bestowed on young SMEs which have displayed great potential to become successful players in the local and international market place. They must be SMEs registered within 6-months and 3 years. They are companies that are on the verge of a breakthrough and will become successful when given the necessary financial support, guidance and nurturing. Selection Criteria: The Company must be able to present a unique and competitive business documents or potential business strategy that was successfully executed. By Application

Definition: This is bestowed on financial institution that has created or implemented an innovative product, delivery mechanism or integrated financial education with product offering. They must have existed and done business for at least 3 continues years. They must show evidence of innovative products or service. Selection Criteria: The applicant must provide evidence of its SME Loan portfolio and other product innovations and their benefit to Micro and SME businesses. They must also submit a 5-years financial projection plan with sustainable growth pattern. By Application

Definition: This award is bestowed on SMEs in the Agribusiness Sector. Agri-service providers, Agriculture processing, Animal Production, Crop Production, Agri-Input dealers & Rural Agri-finance. Selection Criteria: Applicants must possess products with at least 70% local content and a major contributor to the company’s revenue. They must have contributed to enhancing the economic & social life of the local communities in which they operate as well as contributing to Ghana’s economic development. By Application

Definition: This award is bestowed on SMEs in the Industrial Sector – that transform raw materials into products or goods, (Manufacturing, Construction, Agriculture, Processing, Textile, Mining & Quarrying, etc.) with micro operations that have successfully made significant achievement in Ghana. Selection Criteria: Applicants must possess products with at least 50% local content and a major contributor to the company’s revenue. They must have contributed to enhancing the economic & social life of the local communities in which they operate. By Application

Definition: This award is bestowed on SMEs in the Services Sector (Business Services) that provide outstanding service in the market place. Selection Criteria: Applicants must have exhibited excellent service delivery through positive and healthy use of resources and must have contributed to enhancing the economic & social life of the local communities in which they operate. They must show strong commitment in promoting quality made-in-Ghana products and in services. By Application

Definition: This award is bestowed on SMEs in the Trade Sector (Wholesale and Retail) with micro operations that have successfully made significant achievement in their businesses. Selection Criteria: Applicants must possess products with at least 70% local content and a major contributor to the company’s revenue. They must have contributed to enhancing the economic & social life of the local communities in which they operate. They must show commitment and also provide evidence of promoting quality made-in-Ghana goods. By Application

Definition: This Award is bestowed on any individual, business, charity, social enterprise or other public bodies that contribute to sustainable development by delivering economic, social and environmental benefits for all stakeholders for the improvement of societies. It may relate to the entire work they do or specific projects they undertake. Selection Criteria: Applicants must show strong ways of:

  • Solving a clearly identified need in the community;
  • Helping to resolve specific disadvantages in communities;
  • Using innovative and inspiring means to achieve quality social change.

Applicants shall submit a concise profile, giving examples of photos and/or footage where possible and quantifying the impact on the community. By Nomination, Invitation or Application

Definition: This award is bestowed on the best woman entrepreneur who has founded or headed an SME and must have held her position for not less than 3 years prior to the awards. They must have contributed to raising employment and job creation. Selection criteria: Nominees must own at least 51% shares in the business and must be the primary decision makers. Definition: This award is bestowed on unique and exceptional entrepreneurs and leaders of the SME Sector. E.g. CEOs or Managing Directors whose leadership style and managerial skills may have transformed their organisation and promoted business growth. Selection Criteria: The award recipient must exhibit entrepreneurial spirit and must emanate from small and medium business. Their achievements must be impressive enough to inspire the aspirations of thousands of SME entrepreneurs who are looking for a role model to emulate. By Nomination, Invitation or Application

Definition: This award is bestowed SMEs who have move from manual ways of operations to adopt ICT and Technology usage in their businesses to attain operational efficiency and compete effectively in the market space. Selection Criteria: Applicants must have moved from manual platforms of processing documents and other operational activities to practical and aggressive initiatives towards the adoption of ICT and new technologies, reaping benefits both operationally and financially as a result. By Application

Definition: This award is bestowed on SMEs that have produced outstanding made-in-Ghana product process or business model. This involves the development and market introduction of a new, redesigned or noticeably improved good or service. Product innovation by a business include a new product invention, technical specification and quality improvements made on an existing product or the inclusion of new components, materials or required functions into an existing product. Selection Criteria: Applicants must possess products with at least 90% local content and a major contributor to the company’s revenue. By Nomination or Application

Definition: This award is bestowed on SMEs that excel in overseas market penetration and derive the bulk of their revenue from exporting non-traditional export products. Selection Criteria: Applicants must have at least one or more of their produce exported, and the revenue forming at least 70% of the company’s total revenue.  By Application  

Definition: This award is a recognition award bestowed on SMEs with long standing recognizable service to society. The business must be registered and operational since its establishment and operating prior to the awards year. They must have contributed to sustainable livelihoods through employment generation and job creation. Selection Criteria: Nominees shall provide registration documents as proof of establishment and existence of their businesses and a business profile and financials – Background checks will be performed on receiving SMEs.

  • Nomination is open to the general Ghanaian public who may nominate a deserving individual or the organizers of the SME Ghana Awards who may write to invite an individual identified or recommended.

Definition: This award is a recognition award bestowed on Media Houses which have contributed significantly to the promotion and development of SMEs in the country. The contribution can be best reporting on SMEs or promoting the SME sector or community to help develop or improve their operations. Selection Criteria: Invitees must have played prominent and proactive roles in the promotion and development of SMEs, especially during their formative or growing stages, by providing platforms that enhance SMEs’ competitive edge and operational efficiency in the pursuit of local and global market penetration. No nomination required. By invitation or Application

Definition: This award is a recognition award bestowed on outstanding and brilliant personalities who have devoted time and resources on research work to improve the SME Sector of Ghana. Selection Criteria: The award recipient must have at least published articles and findings on their research. They must support their application with list of titles and number of publications, links and sources to their publications.

  • Nomination is open to the general Ghanaian public who may nominate a deserving individual or the organizers of the SME Ghana Awards who may write to invite an individual identified or recommended.

Definition: This award is bestowed on Corporations and Government Statutory Bodies, NGOs, SME service providers & facilitators which have contributed significantly to the promotion and development of SMEs in Ghana. Their input may be pecuniary or non-pecuniary in nature. Selection Criteria: Participants must have played prominent and proactive roles in the promotion and development of SMEs during their formative or growing stages. They must have provided solutions and programmes that enhanced SMEs’ competitiveness and operational efficiency. They must provide evidence of their involvement and its impact any SME to support their application. By Nomination, Invitation or Application

Definition: This award is bestowed SMEs with micro operations that have successfully made the transition from being privately-owned companies to public-listed companies. Selection Criteria: Contenders must be public-listed company for more than a year in Ghana and have continued to excel in their businesses. These companies reflect the achievements of their founders and serve as shining examples of entrepreneurship, perseverance and strategizing. By Nomination, Invitation or Application

Definition: This is a recognition award conferred on individuals whose contribution impact on industry in a tremendous way and determine the course of events over several years within and beyond their industry. The impact of their action leaves footprints which become a benchmark and/or a legacy for generations. They may have contributed immensely to creating employment and job opportunities for people and in the area of Corporate Social Initiatives. Selection Criteria: The nominee must provide a comprehensive profile of their achievements and evidence of social initiatives undertaken by them.

  • Nomination is open to the general Ghanaian public who may nominate a deserving individual or the organizers of the SME Ghana Awards who may write to invite an individual identified or recommended.
  • Any three (3) voting members of the SMEGA Jury may confirm an eligible candidate to receive the prestigious award for a particular year. By Nomination or Invitation

 

Definition: This is the most prestigious recognition award conferred on an individual sighted for his/her significant contributions to the SME sector, Corporate Ghana, Academia, and Personal endeavours in local and international engagements. These may include facilitating processes through advocacy and technical writings (policy development), education, research, management, and other enabling structures that contribute to SMEs’ growth. These contributions may be wholly or partly performed as voluntary or non-voluntary. The deserving individual must have contributed substantial skills and expertise or talent to improve SMEs’ well-being. Selection Criteria: The nominee must provide a comprehensive profile of their achievements.

  • Nomination is open to the general Ghanaian public who may nominate a deserving individual or the organizers of the SME Ghana Awards who may write to invite an individual identified or recommended.
  • Any three (3) voting members of the SMEGA Jury may confirm an eligible candidate to receive the prestigious award for a particular year. By Nomination or Invitation

Definition: This award is bestowed on the crème-de-la-crème of listed applicants who excel the most in every aspect of their corporate performance and operations. They must have participated and won in more than one (1) category of the SME Ghana Awards in a particular year. Selection Criteria: Contenders must have performed extremely well in all scoring criteria, e.g. Business growth rate, Health & Safety performance, Management style, Products & Markets performance, operations, technologies (ICT), Corporate Social Initiatives, as well as financial performance. The SMEGA HALL OF FAME AWARD is a recognition’s award conferred on SMEs, SME service providers & facilitators, Corporations, Government Statutory Bodies, NGOs, who may win awards in a particular category of the SME Ghana Awards three (3) consecutive or sporadic years.

Once an institution, a business or an individual is admitted into the SMEGA Hall of Fame, they are no longer eligible to participate in the same award category that earned them entry into the Hall of Fame.
